About

Liver cirrhosis is a long-term condition in which healthy liver tissue becomes progressively replaced by scar tissue (fibrosis). This scarring can interfere with the liver's ability to perform important functions, including processing nutrients, removing harmful substances from the blood, producing proteins, and helping regulate blood clotting.

Cirrhosis can develop for many different reasons. Common causes include long-term alcohol-related liver disease, chronic hepatitis B or C infection, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and certain autoimmune, genetic, or bile-duct disorders. In some people, more than one factor may contribute.

Early cirrhosis may cause few or no noticeable symptoms. As liver function becomes affected, symptoms may include tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, swelling of the legs or abdomen, itching, and yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

Advanced cirrhosis can lead to serious complications such as fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites), bleeding from enlarged veins in the digestive tract, confusion related to hepatic encephalopathy, infections, kidney problems, and liver cancer. The severity and progression can vary considerably between individuals.

Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, preventing or managing complications, and protecting remaining liver function. Depending on the cause and stage, management may involve medicines, lifestyle changes, treatment of infections or other underlying conditions, regular monitoring, and in advanced cases, evaluation for liver transplantation.
