Know the Symptoms. Protect Your Health.
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can affect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. Flu spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and particles released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or breathes.
Flu often begins suddenly and may cause fever or chills, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle or body aches, tiredness, and sometimes a runny or blocked nose. Some people, particularly children, may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Most people recover from flu within several days to a couple of weeks, but the illness can sometimes become serious. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and individuals with certain chronic health conditions may have a higher risk of complications such as pneumonia or worsening of existing health problems.
Management usually focuses on rest, adequate fluids, and relief of symptoms, according to individual medical needs. Antiviral medicines may be recommended for some people, particularly those at higher risk of complications or those with severe illness. Antibiotics do not treat influenza because it is caused by viruses.
Preventive measures include hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, improving ventilation, and influenza vaccination when recommended.
