Protect Your Vision. Know the Signs.
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage is often associated with increased pressure inside the eye, although glaucoma can also occur when eye pressure is within the usual range.
Glaucoma often develops gradually and without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Over time, it can cause loss of peripheral (side) vision and, if untreated, may lead to significant or permanent vision loss. Because early damage may be difficult to notice, regular eye examinations are important, particularly for people who have risk factors for glaucoma.
There are different types of glaucoma, including open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma. The symptoms and urgency can differ between types. Acute angle-closure glaucoma can cause sudden severe eye pain, blurred vision, halos around lights, headache, nausea, and vomiting and requires urgent medical attention.
Glaucoma cannot currently be reversed once established optic-nerve damage has occurred, but early detection and appropriate treatment can help slow or control further damage. Treatment may include prescription eye drops, laser procedures, surgery, or a combination, depending on the type and severity of glaucoma.
